Non-toxic towels

What’s really in most towels. The research.

Three things most towels contain, what the studies found, and how we left each one out.

OEKO-TEX® certified · Water-washed only

The research

Three problems. What the research found. What we did.

  1. Problem 01

    Your towel is part plastic.

    “Cotton-rich” means a polyester blend.

    The research

    496,000

Polyester is plastic (PET). One 6 kg polyester wash shed about 496,000 plastic microfibers.

Napper & Thompson, Marine Pollution Bulletin 2016

    The MIORA fix

    100% cotton.

No polyester, so none of the 496,000 microfibers a polyester wash sheds.

    Polyester: 0%

  2. Problem 02

    The softness is a coating.

    Softener makes towels absorb less.

    The research

    Less absorbent

Liquid fabric softener coats cotton fibers and makes towels absorb less water. The softness you feel in the store is the coating.

Igarashi & Nakamura, Journal of Oleo Science 2021

    The MIORA fix

    Zero softeners.

Soft from the cotton itself. Nothing to wear off.

    Water-washed only

  3. Problem 03

    Chemical finishes and dyes.

    The top textile skin triggers.

    The research

    1,000+

Formaldehyde resin finishes and disperse dyes are the textile chemicals dermatologists most link to skin allergy. OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 tests fabric against 1,000+ harmful substances.

U.S. GAO, Formaldehyde in Textiles (GAO-10-875, 2010); DermNet, Formaldehyde allergy; Malinauskiene et al., Contact Dermatitis 2013; Nijman et al., Contact Dermatitis 2023; OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, oeko-tex.com

    The MIORA fix

    None. OEKO-TEX® tested.

No resin finish, no disperse or AZO dyes. 1,000+ substances tested.
