For your skincare routine

How your towel undoes your skincare. The research.

Three ways a towel works against your routine, what dermatology research found, and the fix for each.

100% cotton · No softeners · A fresh one every night

The research

Three problems. What the research found. What we did.

  1. Problem 01

    Breakouts that won’t quit.

Yesterday’s damp towel wipes bacteria back onto clean skin.

    The research

    Clean towel

Damp, reused towels carry bacteria. Dermatologists’ acne advice: use a clean towel, and pat, don’t rub.

American Academy of Dermatology, acne and face-washing guidance; Gerba, University of Arizona (bathroom towel bacteria)

    The MIORA fix

A fresh face towel every night.

Four in the Skin Set: one in use, three clean. Skin you just cleansed only ever touches a clean, dry towel.

    4 face towels

  2. Problem 02

    Dark spots that won’t fade.

Rubbing irritates skin, and irritated skin makes new marks.

    The research

    Friction

Friction triggers pigment: dermatologists documented “friction melanosis” from rubbing skin with nylon towels. Irritation leaves marks too, especially on deeper skin tones.

Tanigaki et al., Journal of Dermatology 1985 (friction melanosis); Hsieh & Tsai, Dermatitis 2023; Davis & Callender, J Clin Aesthet Dermatol 2010 (PIH in darker skin)

    The MIORA fix

    Press once. No rubbing.

Dense 780 GSM, zero-twist cotton soaks up water on contact, so one press dries your face. Your brightening serum stops fighting new marks.

  3. Problem 03

Redness and stinging after you wash.

Most towels carry a softener film or a chemical finish.

    The research

    Top triggers

Formaldehyde resin finishes and disperse dyes are the top textile skin-allergy triggers, and softener leaves a coating on the fibers.

U.S. GAO, Formaldehyde in Textiles (GAO-10-875, 2010); DermNet, Formaldehyde allergy; Malinauskiene et al., Contact Dermatitis 2013; Nijman et al., Contact Dermatitis 2023; Igarashi & Nakamura, Journal of Oleo Science 2021

    The MIORA fix

    Nothing on it but cotton.

No softener, no formaldehyde finish, no disperse dyes. The only thing on freshly cleansed skin is clean cotton.

    Softeners: 0 · Finish: none
