“I’m 71. Every morning, before a towel touches my face, I smell it. My husband doesn’t know.”
Margaret has done it every morning since the Sunday her granddaughter hugged her and pulled back first. Then her daughter Claire turned over the tag on Margaret’s towel and read it out loud.

Every morning, before a towel touches my face, I lift it to my nose and smell it. The bath towel, the hand towel, the little one for my face. Then I decide whether I can use it.
My husband, Frank, doesn’t know. Nobody knows. I’m 71, and I’ve done it every single morning since one Sunday last spring.
That Sunday my granddaughter Lily, who is eight, ran up the porch steps and hugged me. And she pulled back first. She didn’t say a word. She didn’t have to.
Eight-year-olds don’t pretend. That’s why it hurt.
I truly thought it was me.
I washed the towels twice. Then I washed them twice every time. I bought a new detergent. I put vinegar in the rinse because the internet said to. I ran everything on hot.
It came back by Wednesday. Every week, like clockwork: fine on Sunday, sour by Wednesday.
So I started checking. Every morning. If a towel smelled off, I’d slip it into the hamper and get another one before Frank was up.
What Margaret tried

Washing everything twice
Double the laundry, every week. Back by Wednesday.

A new detergent
Her clothes smelled lovely. The towels didn’t.

Vinegar in the rinse
Stiff, scratchy towels with the same smell underneath.

Hot cycle, every load
Hot water can’t wash out what a towel is made of.
Every wash, every week, for months, and the smell came back by Wednesday. None of it changed the towel.
“Mom, why are all your towels on the radiator?”
My daughter Claire came for lunch in October and stopped in the bathroom doorway. I’d been drying every towel on the radiator, trying to beat the smell.
I told her. All of it. The hug, the smelling, Wednesday. She didn’t laugh. She picked up my bath towel, turned the tag over and read it out loud: “Cotton-polyester blend.” Then she opened the cabinet under the sink and held up my softener.
“Mom, it’s not you. It’s the towel. You’ve been coating it every single week.”
Claire, Margaret’s daughter
Why it was back by Wednesday
Claire sat me down and showed me what she’d found. I’ve since read it all for myself:
What Claire showed me
- Softener isn’t softness. It’s a coating. Liquid softener coats cotton fibers and makes towels absorb less, so they hang on the hook damp for hours.
- Damp is where the musty lives. Towels that stay damp grow odor bacteria. One of them turned up in 87% of bad-smelling laundry samples.
- Check the tag for polyester. Studies found polyester holds body odor and skin oil more than cotton, even after washing. And after 40, skin makes more of an oily scent compound that clings to fabric. Nobody can smell their own.
“Softener coats the towel, so it stays damp, and the smell moves in,” Claire said. “Washing twice doesn’t reset it. The towel itself is the problem.”
Claire brought me plain cotton.
The next Sunday she came back with a box. Inside were eight white towels, heavier than anything in my closet. She made me read the tag myself.
It said one thing: 100% cotton.
“Long-staple Turkish cotton,” Claire said. “No softener, no finish, nothing. They wash them in plain water before they ship.” The brand is MIORA. The set is called The Switch.

What was in Claire’s box
One ingredient. Nothing added.
- Fiber
- 100% long-staple Aegean Turkish cotton. Zero polyester to hold body oil or odor.
- Finish
- No silicone or synthetic softeners. No coatings. Pre-washed in plain water only.
- Loops
- Zero-twist: open, plush loops that pull water in on contact. One press and you’re dry.
- Weight
- 780 GSM, dense and heavy. Hang it open and it dries all the way.
- The set
- 2 bath, 2 hand, 4 face. Two of every size: one in use, one drying.
- Tested
- OEKO-TEX® certified: lab-tested against 1,000+ harmful substances.
Claire’s rule before you buy any towel
Read the tag. If it says polyester, microfiber or “cotton-rich,” or nobody can tell you what it was finished with, put it back.

✕ “Plush” blend
Polyester holds oil and odor. Usually finished with softener.

✓ 100% cotton. Nothing added.
One fiber. Washed in plain water. Dries clean.
“Eight towels? I have a closet full.”
That’s what I said. Claire did the math on the back of an envelope: the extra detergent, the vinegar, the hot washes, the second load of towels every week. I was paying for that smell every month, and the towels I had would never stop holding it.
The Switch is $149.95, once, with free shipping. And you get two of every size, so one is always drying while you use the other.
The cost flip
Re-washing it: double loads, hot cycles, vinegar and new detergent, every week.
Fixing it: $149.95 once for 8 towels.
Margaret’s first month
- Day 1 One warm wash, no softener. Claire threw my softener out herself.
- The first morning I still lifted it to my nose out of habit. Clean cotton. Nothing else.
- Week 1 One press and my face was dry. No rubbing.
- Wednesday I checked. Nothing. Same the next Wednesday.
- A month in I stopped checking. I’d forgotten I ever did.
Sunday, on the porch.
Lily came up the steps at a run, the way she does, and hugged me around the middle. I waited for her to let go.
She didn’t. She stood there with her face in my cardigan and told me about her spelling test, the whole thing, start to finish.
Frank still doesn’t know about the mornings. I’m telling you instead.
Tonight, go smell your dry bath towel. Then wet one corner and smell it again. If it’s fine, ignore me.

Questions
Margaret’s questions, answered.
The same things Margaret asked Claire.
Is it really the towel, not me?
If your towel smells fine dry and musty when it’s wet, yes. That’s the towel: softener keeping it damp, polyester holding oil and odor, and damp fabric growing the bacteria that smell. Swap it and you stop drying your clean body with yesterday.
Will these fix the smell?
That’s what they’re built for. Nothing in them holds a smell: no polyester, no softener, no coating. And two of every size means you always reach for a fully dry towel. Fresh, dry, 100% cotton is how towels stay fresh.
Are they too heavy for me?
They’re 780 GSM, so they’re plush and substantial. That weight is what dries you in one press, with no rubbing. Hang them open and they dry all the way.
What if I don’t like them?
Send them back unused and unwashed, in the box, within 30 days for a refund. Read the full returns policy.
