“My granddaughter pulled back from my hug. Then I heard her whisper: ‘Why does Grandma smell kind of… musty?’”
Margaret is 72. She showers every day and changed her soap twice. Her doctor said everyone’s scent changes at her age. Then her friend Joan asked her one question about her towels.

Thanksgiving, four o’clock. The turkey was resting, the whole family was at the table, and I was waiting at the foot of the stairs with my arms open, the way I have for every one of Ava’s sixteen Thanksgivings.
“There’s my girl!”
She stepped into the hug. And then she stepped out of it, a beat too early, with a quick polite smile, and looked past me at her mother.
I kept smiling. I’m good at that. A minute later, from the dining-room doorway, I heard her whisper to Beth: “Mom, why does Grandma smell kind of… musty?”
In the hallway I lifted the cuff of my cardigan to my nose. I couldn’t smell a thing. That was the worst part.
I did everything a clean woman does.
I shower every single day. I have since I was a girl. After Thanksgiving I showered twice a day. At the end of my checkup I asked my doctor about it, quietly. He closed his folder and said, kindly, “Everyone’s scent changes at your age, Margaret.”
So I went to war with it.
What I tried between Thanksgiving and Advent

Two new soaps
Unscented, then “clinical strength.” My skin was clean. I still didn’t trust it.

Softener in every load
A capful of the blue stuff, every wash, for “fresh.” Silky towels that smelled fine dry.

Hot washes and vinegar
Stiff towels by Sunday. Musty again by Wednesday.

Re-washing the guest towels
Fine folded in the closet. The second they were wet, there it was again.
About $60 a month on soap, softener, scent beads and candles. Every one of them worked on me. Not one of them touched the towel.
Then Joan’s grandkids ran to her and didn’t let go.
Joan is 74, a retired principal, and the most upright woman at our church. The Sunday after Thanksgiving, her two grandkids ran across the fellowship hall and hugged her around the waist. They held on. They kept holding on.
I asked her, as quietly as I’ve ever asked anything: “Your grandkids used to give you quick hugs too. What changed?”
She had me over for coffee. At her kitchen table she tilted her head and asked one question.
“Do your towels smell fine dry, but musty the second they’re wet?”
Joan, 74, Margaret’s friend from church
“Every single time,” I said. “How did you know?”
She set her mug down and leaned across the table.
“You’ve been washing yourself clean and drying off with yesterday.”
Joan
It was never me. It was the towel.
Joan had been through exactly this two years before. Here’s what she had me write down, and what I’ve since read for myself:
What Joan told me to write down
- Softener isn’t softness. It’s a coating. Liquid softener coats cotton fibers and makes towels absorb less, so they hang on the hook damp for hours.
- Damp is where the musty lives. Towels that stay damp grow odor bacteria. One of them turned up in 87% of bad-smelling laundry samples.
- Check the tag for polyester. Studies found polyester holds body odor and skin oil more than cotton, even after washing. And after 40, skin makes more of an oily scent compound that clings to fabric. Nobody can smell their own.
“It’s not you, Margaret,” she said, and put her hand on my arm. “It’s what you dry with.”
I cried a little in her kitchen. Not because it was bad news. Because it wasn’t me.
What Joan keeps in her bathroom
Joan walked me to her bathroom and put a towel in my hands. It was heavy, much heavier than mine, and plush in a way that had nothing slick about it. I pressed my palm into it and it just took the water.
“One hundred percent long-staple Turkish cotton,” she said. “That’s all it is. And it’s OEKO-TEX certified. I checked.”
The brand is MIORA. I went home and read every word on their site the way Joan reads a lunch menu.
What was on Joan’s shelf
One ingredient. Nothing added.
- Fiber
- 100% long-staple Aegean Turkish cotton. Zero polyester to hold body oil or odor.
- Finish
- No silicone or synthetic softeners. No coatings. Pre-washed in plain water only.
- Loops
- Zero-twist: open, plush loops that pull water in on contact. One press and you’re dry.
- Weight
- 780 GSM, dense and heavy. Hang it open and it dries all the way.
- The set
- 2 bath, 2 hand, 4 face. Two of every size: one in use, one drying.
- Tested
- OEKO-TEX® certified: lab-tested against 1,000+ harmful substances.
Joan’s rule before you buy any towel
Read the tag. If it says polyester, microfiber or “cotton-rich,” or nobody can tell you what it was finished with, put it back.

✕ “Plush” blend
Polyester holds oil and odor. Usually finished with softener.

✓ 100% cotton. Nothing added.
One fiber. Washed in plain water. Dries clean.
“Towels? You’ve washed those a hundred times.”
That was Walt, from his armchair, looking at me over his glasses. Forty-nine years married and he still thinks he can talk me out of things.
“One swap,” I told him. “Not a new laundry routine.”
And the money? I had been spending about $60 a month on soap, softener, scent beads and candles, covering something I couldn’t even smell. The Switch was $149.95, once, with free shipping. Less than three months of covering it up, and it changed the one thing that touches my whole body every morning.
The cost flip
Covering it: about $60 a month, every month, for good.
Fixing it: $149.95 once for 8 towels.
Margaret’s first month
- Day 1 The box came. One warm wash, no softener. Never again.
- Week 1 “It’s heavy,” I told Walt. “It actually takes the water.” One press and I was dry.
- Week 2 New habit: hang it open, use one while the other dries. No damp towel on the hook.
- Week 3 I caught myself not checking my cardigan cuffs anymore.
Christmas, same hallway.
The tree was lit by the stairs. Beth and the kids came through the door at dusk, and I said it the way I always do: “There’s my girl!”
Ava stepped into the hug, put both arms all the way around me, and rested her cheek on my shoulder. And she stayed there.
I closed my eyes. Over Ava’s shoulder, Beth caught my eye and smiled.
Later Ava came down from her shower with wet hair, wrapped in one of the bath towels. “Grandma, where did you get these?”
It wasn’t me. It was the towel I dried with.

Questions
Margaret’s questions, answered.
The same things Margaret asked Joan.
Is it really the towel, not me?
If your towel smells fine dry and musty when it’s wet, yes. That’s the towel: softener keeping it damp, polyester holding oil and odor, and damp fabric growing the bacteria that smell. Swap it and you stop drying your clean body with yesterday.
Will these fix the smell?
That’s what they’re built for. Nothing in them holds a smell: no polyester, no softener, no coating. And two of every size means you always reach for a fully dry towel. Fresh, dry, 100% cotton is how towels stay fresh.
Are they too heavy for me?
They’re 780 GSM, so they’re plush and substantial. That weight is what dries you in one press, with no rubbing. Hang them open and they dry all the way.
What if I don’t like them?
Send them back unused and unwashed, in the box, within 30 days for a refund. Read the full returns policy.
