The guest bathroom

7 things guests notice in your bathroom

Towels first, because they're the one thing every guest actually touches.

Folded white towels on a cane bench in a bright bathroom

Guests are polite. They won't tell you the hand towel was damp, or that they dried their face on a bath towel because there wasn't anything else. They'll just notice.

Whether it's your parents for the holidays, a friend on the sofa bed or strangers on a booking app, the bathroom is where people decide whether you were ready for them.

In most homes, the guest towels are whatever is left in the closet, and none of it matches. Here's the checklist.

1The towels

This is the big one. Every guest uses them, usually within an hour of arriving. A folded set that's clearly theirs says you thought about it. A towel on the back of the door says you didn't.

Put them somewhere obvious: the end of the bed, a bench, a clear shelf. Nobody wants to open your cupboards looking for one.

2Whether there's one of each

Bath, hand, face. The face towel is the one most guest bathrooms skip, and it's the one people notice when it's there. One of each per guest is the whole system.

3Whether things match

Matching isn't fussy. It's a signal. A stack of the same towels reads as prepared. A mixed pile reads as spare.

It's also practical. If everything is the same, you never have to remember which towel belongs to which set.

4How the room smells

Fresh air, not a candle working overtime. Clean towels shouldn't need perfume. Open a window the morning they arrive.

Towels folded away damp are the first thing a guest smells. Make sure they're fully dry before they go in the cupboard, and wash the set once before a visit if it's been sitting a while.

5Somewhere to put their things

A free hook. An empty shelf. Space by the sink for a toiletry bag. People feel like guests when there's room for them, and like intruders when there isn't.

Include a hook or rail for the towels. A wet bath towel needs somewhere to hang that isn't the back of a chair.

6The basics they'd otherwise have to ask for

Spare toilet roll, visible. Soap at the sink. A glass. If you have a hair dryer, leave it out. Every question a guest doesn't have to ask is a small kindness.

7Light and a mirror they can use

Overhead light is fine for cleaning. It's not great for anything else. A lamp or a mirror light makes the room feel like a room.

Most of this list is free. The towels are the one thing worth spending on.

How to set out a guest set

Fold each piece the same way. Bath towel in thirds lengthways, then in half. Hand towel the same. Face towel in quarters.

Stack largest to smallest. Bath on the bottom, then hand, then face on top. It looks deliberate because it is.

Put it where they'll see it. On the bed or a bench, not in the bathroom cupboard. One stack per guest.

Leave a hand towel at the sink. One set out and ready, so nobody has to unfold their own to wash their hands.

The maths, if you host a lot

Two guests: plan on three full changes of towels before you have to run a wash.

A busy short-term rental: set out two sets per stay, keep the rest folded for the next turnover.

A full house: one set each.

Between guests, wash every towel that was set out, used or not. Guests can't tell which ones were touched, and neither can you. Skip fabric softener, and fold them the same way every time. That last one is what makes a stack look like a hotel's. It costs nothing.

If it's a gift

A housewarming, a wedding, someone who just bought their first place with a guest room. Towels are a gift that gets used every single day. A matching set of bath, hand and face towels is the easiest version to get right.
